Amy Winehouse Biopic Makes Headway, With Sam Taylor-Johnson as Director

It looks like the Amy Winehouse biopic is finally happening. It has been reported that a new production is making a headway.

The film, titled Back to Black, will have Sam Taylor-Johnson, who is famous for her work on Nowhere Boy and Fifty Shades of Grey, as director and Matt Greenhalgh as the writer. Studiocanal, Alison Owen, Debra Hayward, and Tracey Seaward as producers.

The late singer’s father Mitchell Winehouse and the Amy Winehouse Estate have reportedly given his blessing for Back to Black

In July 2011, 27-year old Amy Winehouse died. A few years later Asif Kapadia released the documentary film about her life and death called Amy. It was promptly slated by Mitchell. But the film has snagged an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature Film.

After the success of Amy, rumors circulated that Irish director Kristen Sheridan would write and helm a Winehouse biopic featuring Noomi Rapace in 2015. But the Sheridan project did not make it through.

In 2018, reports said that Alison Owen and Debra Hayward would produce a Winehouse biopic. They have Geoff Deane as the writer of this movie which is being sanctioned by the Winehouse family. Owen and Hayward would stay as producers of the latest version of the biopic.

The latest biopic should not be demented with the documentary Amy Winehouse – Back to Black, a film about the production of the Back to Black album.
