At the age of fourteen, Dorsey got interested in shipping routing. Some of the open source software he created in the shipping logistics area is still in use by taxi companies. Dorsey studied at the University of Missouri-Rolla for over two years before transferring to New York University, but dropped out in 1999, a semester short before graduating. He had the idea he developed under the name Twitter while studying at NYU.
Williams, Stone, and Noah Glass co-founded Obalous Corporation, which subsequently became Twitter, Inc. Spun off, with Dorsey as chief executive officer (CEO).
Dorsey was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Tim and Marcia (nee Smith) Dorsey. He is of English, Irish and Italian descent. His father worked for a company that developed mass spectrometers and his mother was a homemaker. He grew up a Catholic and his uncle is a Catholic priest in Cincinnati.
As of March 2016, Dorsey funded approximately 600 public school projects registered at DonorsChoose. In October 2019, Dorsey donated $350,000 to #TeamTrees, a non-profit organization founded by YouTuber MrBeast that has committed to planting 20 million trees by the end of 2019.
