According to his mother, Jay-Z woke up his siblings at night by playing drum beats on the kitchen table. She bought a stereo for his birthday, sparking his interest in music and he started freestyling and writing lyrics. Known as “Jazzy” in the neighborhood, he later adopted the stage name “Jay-Z” as a tribute to his mentor Jaz-O.
He was ranked by Billboard and the other Rolling Stone music publication as one of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
He is currently married to superstar Beyonce. At the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, Beyoncé revealed she was pregnant with their first child.
During his retirement, Jay-Z also became involved in philanthropic activity. In 2003, Jay-Z, along with his mother, founded the Shawn Carter Foundation, which helped eligible students who have endured socioeconomic adversity through college.
