South Korean boy group BTS, who paved the way for the K-pop craze worldwide, is taking some time off as a group to focus on solo projects, said the band on Tuesday.

At the yearly FESTA dinner commemorating the group’s founding, band leader RM stated that he had been feeling the urge to navigate his artistry outside the busy BTS life – recording and performing.

“The problem with K-pop and the whole idol system is that they don’t give you time to mature. You have to keep producing music and keep doing something,” stated RM, alongside his six co-members and using the Korean language.

A clip of the dinner was uploaded on the band’s Twitter account.

One of the members described the break as a “hiatus,” according to an English translation of the speech, which a representative of BTS has debunked.

“To be clear, they are not on hiatus but will take time to explore some solo projects at this time and remain active in various different formats,” said the statement.

BTS was released as a band in June 2013, becoming a global pop icon with its music hits and social campaigns targeted at empowering the youth. On Friday, the band issued its most recent album, Proof

The previous year, BTS marked the first time an Asian band won the artist of the year category for the American Music Awards. And they met US President Joe Biden at the White House in May to talk about anti-Asian hate crimes.
