Lil Nas X has tapped some inspiration from Marvel Studios’ opening sequence in the iconic trailer for his upcoming album.
On his social media handles, the 22-year old controversial rapper Lil Nas X announced the release of his debut album with a trailer. The trailer features some of the most notable moments from his career, including visual sequences from his hit song “Old Town Road” and his 2021 hit singles. The eponymous album, named after him and his hit song “Montero (Call me by your name),” has no release date, but Lil Nas X said the album is coming soon. The trailer closes out with some trumpet fanfare followed by what might be snippets of an unreleased song.
“MONTERO: The Debut Album” is a body of work expected to house hit singles like “Call Me By Your Name (Montero)” and his most recent single, “Sun Goes Down,” which was released in April. Lil Nas has stayed in the news this year, most notably with the music video for “Call Me By Your Name (Montero),” where he was filmed giving the devil a lap dance. He further gave the media more things to talk about with his performance of the song at the 2021 BET Awards, which ended with a steamy kiss between him and one of his male dancers.
The announcement of the upcoming album has built up anticipation amongst fans and music enthusiasts. The album is also expected to feature “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” and “Sun Goes Down,” his two successful singles in 2021, and according to Lil Nas X, his next music video will come with something newer and crazier than what fans are used to.
Earlier in the year, Lil Nas X got embroiled in some controversy after he released the video for “Call Me By Your Name.” He collaborated with fashion collective MSCHF to release a limited edition of Satan-themed Air Max 97s. Nike released a statement that it never authorized the sales of the shoe collection and sued the company. A judge ordered the company to stop any further shipping of more pairs.
Riding on the wave of his heavy media presence, Lil Nas X told Zane Lowe in an interview on Apple Music that the upcoming album will have about 15 to 18 tracks. In autumn, a deluxe edition of the album will be released to amplify the reach of the initial version. He also stated that the song “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” brought out a new kind of confidence in him. “I felt in control without caring about who got upset by anything I did. I did what I wanted, and I won’t have it any other way,” he said.
The artist has reiterated that he will always do what he wants in his artistic career; otherwise, he thinks he would fail.
Lil Nas X has dedicated his career’s projects to giving queer people a platform to exist, and he promised that his album will not do any less. On The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, he opened up more about his album, saying that it depicts his entire life and his story is what led to the album’s creation.
