Mark Tuschman, an internationally acclaimed photographer, has dedicated his career to inspiring the essence of humanitarian causes. His latest work, Together We Rise, Immigrants in America, is a sparking proof of his commitment to highlighting the vital contributions of immigrants. In a time of heightened polarization and anti-immigrant rhetoric, Tuschman’s book serves as a source of empathy and understanding, showcasing the diversity and strength immigrants bring to the United States.
Visionary Behind the Lens
Tuschman’s journey as a photographer spans over four decades, during which he has traveled the world to document the lives of marginalized communities. His work is grounded in a deep belief that photography can be a powerful tool for social change. “With the best tools I have—my heart and my camera—I have been documenting the contributions that so many immigrants make every single day, for the good of our country, the good of our people,” Tuschman reflects.
The Mission of Together We Rise
Together We Rise is a plea for compassion. The book is divided into six sections: Our Land, Our Food, Our Health, Our Economy, Our Educators, Our Justice, and Our Future. It provides an intimate look at the lives of over 120 immigrants who contribute to the fabric of American society. Tuschman explains:
For Together We Rise, I photographed more than 200 men and women from all over the world. Some came as undocumented immigrants. Some came seeking asylum. Others came as DACA recipients. And others came traditionally in search of new lives and full citizenship. I met people who work in vineyards and strawberry fields; I met chefs, restaurateurs, doctors, lawyers, judges, and dozens of high-tech creators and innovators. And without exception, each immigrant expressed the desire to contribute fully to our society, and they came here because they deeply admire and respect our democratic values and ideals. As one of our immigrants reminded me so eloquently: “Immigration is the greatest form of flattery.”
Celebrating Immigrant Contributions
One of the book’s most interesting sections features immigrants who work tirelessly to feed America. For example Efraim Morales from Mexico, a farmer who brings fresh produce to American tables. His story shows the dedication and hard work that underpin our agricultural industry. His three children are well-educated and are in the process of becoming a doctor, a lawyer and an engineer.
In the healthcare sector, Tuschman highlights the contributions of immigrants like Nargis Jumahan from Afghanistan, a licensed vocational nurse whose care and compassion are instrumental in treating patients.
These healthcare heroes are essential, especially in times of crisis. As Tuschman notes, “Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, I have seen firsthand the essential role that immigrants are playing during these extremely difficult times.”
Dr. Hector Bonilla, from Columbia is only one of a handful of doctors treating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Immigrant entrepreneurs and workers significantly enhance the economic vitality of the United States. Iranian entrepreneur Narges Baniasadi founded a company that facilitates the analysis of DNA.
Doroteo Garcia from Mexico, a janitor at Stanford University, highlights the diverse essential work that sustains and grows our economy.
Praveen Sahay from India, a venture capitalist, invests in sustainable solutions to manage food, energy and water management.
Education is another field enriched by immigrant contributions. Marta Lillian Marcos De Silva from El Salvador, a preschool teacher, shapes the minds of future generations with her dedication and passion.
Tuschman’s portraits capture the essence of these educators, whose work ensures a brighter future for all.
Immigrants also play a vital role when it comes to justice in America. Nahal Iravani-Sani from Iran, a judge in the California Superior Court, represents the fairness and integrity that immigrants bring to the legal system.
Esmeralda Loya from Mexico, an asylum recipient, embodies the resilience and determination of those seeking a better life under the protection of American laws.
Young immigrants like Valeria Avila Guerrero from Mexico, a graduate student in robotics, are shaping the future of America. Her pursuit of advanced technology reflects immigrants’ forward-thinking contributions, ensuring that America remains at the forefront of innovation.
A Personal Connection
Tuschman’s passion for this project is deeply personal. As the grandson of immigrants from the former Soviet Union, he understands the impact immigration has on individuals and families.
“Had they not been allowed to enter as immigrants, I likely would never have been born,” he reflects. This personal history ignites his commitment to showcasing the stories of immigrants who, like his grandparents, come to America seeking hope and opportunity.
Conclusion
Mark Tuschman’s Together We Rise is a timely and essential work that invites readers to see beyond the divisive rhetoric and recognize the shared humanity that binds us all. It is not a polemic. It is simply an illuminating portrait of the immigrant experience in America. Through his lens, we see the strength, resilience, and spirit of immigrants who enrich every sector of American life.
