Wilson is the son of three children of photographer Laura Wilson (born Cunningham) (born 1939) and Robert Andrew Wilson (1941-2017), publicity manager and operator. of a public television station. His parents, of Irish descent, were originally from Massachusetts.


Wilson co-wrote the screenplay for Anderson’s next two directorial films Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums, for which they won Academy Award nominations for Best Screenplay.

In January 2011, Wilson and his girlfriend Jade Duell had a son. Wilson and Duell ended their relationship. In January 2014, Caroline Lindqvist gave birth to Wilson’s second child. He had a third child, a daughter, in October 2018, with his ex-girlfriend Varunie Vongsvirates.
