Before Fame

When Gomez was born, her mother was sixteen years old. The family struggled financially during Gomez’s childhood as his mother struggled to provide for the pair. At one point, Gomez recalled, they had to look for fifteen minutes to get gasoline for their car. Her mother later recalled that the two often went to the dollar store to buy spaghetti for dinner.


Gomez started her career by starring in the children’s television series Barney & Friends (2002–2004). As a teenager, she gained greater recognition for her role as Alex Russo in the Disney Channel Emmy Award-winning television series Wizards of Waverly Place (2007–2012).

Family Life

Selena Marie Gomez was born in Grand Prairie, Texas on July 22, 1992, to Ricardo Joel Gomez and former American stage actress Amanda Dawn “Mandy” Cornett. Gomez is named after singer Tejano Selena Quintanilla, who died in 1995. Her father is of Mexican descent while her mother, who has been adopted, is of Italian descent.

Gomez introduced Nellie Mainor, a young fan with a rare kidney disease. Her participation in WE Day 2019 was her first appearance after a long hiatus in the spotlight. Gomez continued her partnership with WE Charity when she traveled to Kenya in December 2019 to meet with the local community and visit the schools built by the organization.
