The MTV Video Music Awards has always been a stellar occasion, with many celebrities and the who’s who of the entertainment industry gracing the famous red carpet. This year’s event, held on September 12 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, was no different, featuring the kind of performances the awards have come to be known for. However, perhaps the only unexpected “performance” of the night was the skirmish between two of the stars of the night.
Varying reports, photographs, and footage have emerged showing that there was some form of a skirmish between Colson Baker, popularly known as Machine Gun Kelly, and former UFC champion Conor McGregor prior to the beginning of the evening’s broadcast. McGregor was at the awards to present the Artist of the Year Award. At the same time, Kelly was nominated in the Best Alternative award category and was scheduled to perform his latest song, “Papercuts,” with Travis Barker.
Presently, it is difficult to pin down what exactly happened. In keeping with reports from TMZ, the MMA fighter had noticed Kelly on the red carpet and went over to say hello. PEOPLE’s report has him going over for a photograph. However, at his approach, Kelly reportedly mouthed something to his security, who then intercepted McGregor, shoving him away and spilling his drink in the process. Shedding more light on the situation, an eyewitness maintained that, in addition, Kelly “sort of snarled” at McGregor during the exchange, prompting the quick-tempered Irishman to drop his cane and lunge at Kelly.
However, in an issued statement following the incident, the spokesperson for McGregor stated, “Conor McGregor did not ask anyone for a picture, nor did he instigate this incident.”
A posted video showed the pair standing across from each other before McGregor apparently lunged and poured what was left of his drink in the direction of Kelly and his entourage. Security was forced to intervene to prevent the exchange from coming to fisticuffs as Conor was unwilling to back down. According to an unknown source, “They scuffled, then it settled down, and Conor went for him again.” The source added, “He was ready to throw fists, and security was having trouble holding him back.” Kelly’s girlfriend, Megan Fox, was seen being whisked away from the scene as event officials attempted to keep both celebrities apart.
Both parties seemed to recover quickly from the near fight, and the rest of the night seemed to proceed as planned—McGregor presented the Artist of the Year Award to the winner, Justin Bieber and Kelly won the Best Alternative award for his song “My Ex’s Best Friend” featuring Blackbear. However, his performance with Travis was pushed back to the end of the broadcast. It is unknown whether the evening’s earlier events had anything to do with the reshuffling.
In the aftermath of the award’s proceedings, McGregor, speaking with Entertainment Tonight, said, “I don’t know. I just showed up, and I don’t know. I don’t even know the guy, to be honest with you—just rumors. Nothing happened with me. I only fight real fighters. People that actually fight. I certainly don’t fight little Vanilla Ice white rappers.” He added, “I don’t even know the guy. I don’t know anything about him, except that he’s with Megan Fox.”
Kelly, on the other hand, refused to comment on the issue.
