Before Fame

Banks attended John Burroughs Middle School and graduated from Immaculate Heart High School in Los Angeles. Banks said growing up she was made fun of for her looks and considered an “ugly duckling”; When Banks was 11 years old, she grew five inches and lost 30 pounds in three months.


In 2010 she published a young adult novel entitled Modelland, based on her life as a model. It topped The New York Times Best Seller list in 2011. Banks is one of four African-Americans and seven women to be repeatedly named one of the most influential people in the world by Time magazine.

Family Life

Banks was in a relationship with Norwegian photographer Erik Asla in the 2010s and in January 2016 they had a biological child born through surrogacy.

Associated With

Banks set up the TZONE program, which focused on leadership and life skills development. She has also established the Tyra Banks Scholarship, a fund that aims to give African American girls the opportunity to attend her alma mater, Immaculate Heart High School.
