“JuJu Dream,” the latest release by World Funk Orchestra, is a whirlwind of musical excellence and heartfelt storytelling. Each member showcases their extraordinary talent, resulting in performances that leave a lasting impact. Inspired by the evocative imagery of Greenwich Village’s smoke-filled cafes and the profound truths of beat poets like Ginsberg, Kerouac, and Gil Scott Heron, lyricist and maestro Mitchell Stuart delivers powerful spoken word poetry that deeply resonates with those who have faced loneliness and isolation. His narrative assures listeners that the universe acknowledges them, igniting a sense of purpose.

World Funk Orchestra, the acclaimed artist known for their evocative and genre-blending music, is thrilled to introduce their latest single, “JuJu Dream.” This new track is set to captivate listeners with its unique blend of JuJu music and spoken word, taking inspiration from legendary artists and personal experiences.

When asked about the inspiration behind “JuJu Dream,” World Funk Orchestra shared, “JuJu is a style of music made popular by an artist that endlessly inspired me, King Sunny Ade from Nigeria. The layering of guitars, the lyrical funk of the bass line, and the slide guitar were all inspired by seeing him on tours. The lyrics are autobiographical, based on my square peg/round hole existence growing up in Brooklyn. The decision to use spoken word in the verses just seemed right, inspired by the work of Gil Scott Heron.”

Differing from previous works, “JuJu Dream” prominently features spoken word—a departure that showcases World Funk Orchestra’s evolution. Despite some previous spoken word cameos in songs like “Strangers On A Train” and “The Factory,” this track marks a significant change with a full spoken word performance. The contrast with Rebecca McCartney’s gorgeous harmonies on the chorus further amplifies the song’s impact.

The creative process behind “JuJu Dream” was both exhilarating and intimate. “It started with a riff I had in my head forever—the main JuJu riff. Then I had a blast creating and recording like 10-12 other guitar tracks in our apartment. Once the bass line came to me, the funk foundation was set for my partner, Michael Ratti, to record all the percussion and drums. His inspired choice of using bongos, straight out of the beatnik era, complemented the Spoken Word approach,” World Funk Orchestra stated.

Collaborating with the talented Rebecca McCartney on vocals, the single delivers an authentic and heartfelt message. According to World Funk Orchestra, “Even if you ‘live in your head, because what’s outside your door is nothing to write about,’ you can still dream and aspire. This song reflects my journey and the transformative power of meeting the woman who empowered all my dreams. It conveys the message that we all can overcome our circumstances and strive for purpose and happiness.”

The recording sessions were a testament to the power of home studios and modern technology. “All the percussion, background vocals, guitars, bass, and keyboards were recorded in home studios. The creative freedom this offers is transformative,” noted World Funk Orchestra.

As World Funk Orchestra continues to stay true to their artistic vision, they emphasize the importance of authenticity. “Write lyrics from your life, remain fearless in your belief system, and try to be authentic. It’s the only way to ultimately reach an audience. Tell your truth,” they advised.

World Funk Orchestra hopes “JuJu Dream” resonates deeply with listeners, aspiring to touch lives through the magic of music. “If we reach one person, that is the magic. If we reach more, it’s a blessing. We make no predictions but have big, positive plans and aspirations,” they said.

Fans can look forward to several upcoming projects, including a top-secret release set to be announced this summer, a “JuJu Dream” remix, and a feature documentary on the inspiring Harry Massy, which World Funk Orchestra is directing and scoring.
