Artist and Mentor Brittany O’Connor on Social Expectations, Gaslighting, and How to Break Free

Sometimes the only option one has is to find a direction and pave one’s own way toward success. Many people walk the safe route, but only a few dare to walk the path less taken. Brittany O’Connor, an artist and mentor, is a perfect role model for young artists and dancers with her brilliant knowledge of the dance industry and bravado of doing it all by herself.

Being the eldest of seven siblings, Brittany always felt like a leader and had the built-in qualities to mentor young people. She went through many struggles in her life, like her health issues and dancing career choice. These choices were looked down upon, and she was told she couldn’t make it because of her diagnosis as a hypochondriac. Brittany needed to ensure she persevered and succeeded in making her life an example for young people to keep looking for answers and never settle for less.

Although a talented dancer, she started ballet training very late in her career. She was 14 when she entered a ballet class and worked hard to grasp the classical dance style. She stayed late after classes to work on her dance routines and eventually became an excellent ballerina. Despite people saying she was late to the game and couldn’t dance because of her health, she persevered and succeeded.

Many doctors had diagnosed her as a hypochondriac since childhood. She suffered from weak kidneys, ovarian cysts, bone fractures, and strep throat – only to be met with constant use of antibiotics. It wasn’t until 15 years and numerous doctors later that Brittany discovered her auto-immune disease – stage 4 Hashimoto, hypothyroid, and thyroid atrophy. Her will to fight gave her all the answers she sought and paved the way toward a healthier and happier lifestyle.

Brittany has learned to fight since birth; her father and mother are fighters in their own world. Her father is a veteran and quadriplegic due to injury. He was also told he couldn’t live normally or have more children – but he did. Similarly, her mother is a wall street woman working daily in a cutthroat financial environment. People around her never encouraged her, but she broke the glass ceiling and emerged triumphant. Being a daughter to people like this is enough motivation to do something more with your life.

Being an intelligent woman, Brittany was always encouraged to focus on academics. But her heart was always into dancing and art. Not heeding any criticism, she powered through it and, for half a decade, has been performing as a lead principal dancer for Andrea Bocelli’s world tour. She also mentors other young artists and dancers through the Youth American Grand Prix. Moreover, she helps people live freely by eradicating slavery from India through her non-profit initiative, Voices 4 Freedom.

Shawn Joseph Superintendent: The Role of Superintendents in Advancing Racial Equity in Schools

Education is often lauded as the great equalizer. However, for it to truly play this role, the issue of racial equity must be front and center. Superintendents, as top educational leaders in school districts, play a pivotal role in ensuring that every student, regardless of race or background, receives a high-quality education. One leader who stands out in this arena is Shawn Joseph, Superintendent from Nashville, Tennessee. But what can superintendents like Shawn Joseph do to advance racial equity? The changes they instigate can resonate through every classroom, influencing both educators and students alike molding the future of education.

Understanding Racial Equity in Education

Racial equity in education means that every student has an equal opportunity to succeed, irrespective of their racial background. This goes beyond merely closing achievement gaps; it means creating an environment where all students feel valued, understood, and challenged. It’s about acknowledging that systemic racism exists and actively working to dismantle those barriers in the education system. Shawn Joseph, Superintendent of Nashville’s schools, has consistently emphasized that racial and educational equity are intertwined, and superintendents play a crucial role in bridging this gap. Addressing this requires a deep understanding of historical contexts and a visionary approach to future solutions.

The Proactive Approach of Superintendents

  1. Setting the Tone: Superintendents, by virtue of their position, have the power to set the tone for the entire district. They can ensure that racial equity is a core value woven into every aspect of the district’s operations. This means being vocal about the importance of equity, backing it up with actionable policies, and ensuring that these policies are implemented. This leadership role sets a precedent for all educators in the district, making equity a shared responsibility.
  2. Professional Development: One of the key ways to advance racial equity is through continuous professional development. Superintendents can prioritize and fund training programs that focus on cultural responsiveness, bias awareness, and equitable teaching practices. By doing so, they ensure that educators are well-equipped to cater to diverse student populations and can recognize and counteract their own biases.
  3. Diverse Hiring Practices: Superintendents have a say in hiring decisions, and they can advocate for a more diverse teaching and administrative staff. A diverse staff not only brings varied perspectives but also serves as role models for students of color. This representation can boost student morale and aspirations, making them feel seen and understood in educational settings.

Engaging the Community

Community engagement is crucial when addressing racial equity. Superintendents can:

  1. Facilitate Conversations: Open dialogues about race, privilege, and equity can be challenging but are necessary. Superintendents can facilitate these conversations among educators, parents, and students, ensuring that they are constructive and lead to actionable outcomes. By fostering an environment of open communication, they pave the way for trust and mutual respect.
  2. Collaborate with Local Organizations: Many community organizations are already working on issues of racial equity. Superintendents can collaborate with these entities, pooling resources and knowledge. This synergy can lead to more effective and sustainable strategies that benefit students and the community at large.
  3. Seek Feedback: Superintendents can actively seek feedback from parents, students, and educators about their experiences related to racial equity in schools. This feedback can be invaluable in shaping policies and practices. Continuous feedback ensures that initiatives are relevant and in line with community needs, making changes more impactful.

Data-Driven Decision Making

Using data is a powerful way to address racial disparities. Superintendents can:

  1. Monitor Achievement Gaps: By regularly reviewing data on test scores, graduation rates, and other academic indicators, superintendents can identify where disparities exist and allocate resources accordingly. Being proactive in addressing these disparities means that no student is left behind, ensuring an equitable educational experience for all.
  2. Review Discipline Data: Racial disparities often manifest in discipline practices. Superintendents can ensure that discipline policies are not disproportionately targeting students of color. By ensuring fairness in discipline, schools become more inclusive and supportive environments for students of all backgrounds.
  3. Feedback Loop: Data collection shouldn’t be a one-time event. Superintendents like Shawn Joseph, a Superintendent from Nashville, have emphasized the importance of an ongoing feedback loop where data is consistently collected, reviewed, and acted upon. This iterative process helps in refining strategies and making them more effective over time.

Conclusion

Racial equity in schools is not just a moral imperative but also essential for the overall well-being of the educational ecosystem. As top leaders in education, superintendents have a unique responsibility and opportunity to advance this cause. Through proactive measures, community engagement, and data-driven decision-making, they can set the path for a more inclusive and equitable education system. Leaders like Shawn Joseph, a Superintendent from Nashville, serve as an inspiration, showing that with dedication and strategic actions, significant strides in racial equity are achievable. The journey towards racial equity requires a collective effort, but with visionary leadership, our schools can reflect the principles of justice and fairness.

Global Talent Unleashed: The Impact of International Students on the Labor Market

The global labor market is increasingly being shaped by the contributions of international students, a trend that is particularly evident in countries with strong educational infrastructure. As institutions like Pures College of Technology continue to attract students from various parts of the world, these students bring a unique set of skills, perspectives, and innovations to the workforce. This influx of talent not only benefits the economy but also enriches the cultural and intellectual diversity of the workplace.

The Diverse Skill Set of International Students

International students often come equipped with diverse skills that are highly sought after in the global job market. These include multilingual abilities, adaptability, and a global perspective on various issues. At Pures College of Technology, for example, students are exposed to an educational environment that emphasizes practical skills, technological proficiency, and cross-cultural competencies.

Moreover, many international students pursue studies in fields like engineering, information technology, and business, aligning their skills with the high-demand sectors of many economies. Their technical expertise, combined with a unique cultural perspective, makes them valuable assets in the labor market.

Enhancing Innovation and Global Connections

The presence of international students in the workforce significantly contributes to innovation. With backgrounds in different educational systems and cultures, these students often approach problems and challenges differently. This diversity of thought fosters creativity and drives innovation in various industries.

Furthermore, international students can act as bridges between their host country and their home country. Institutions like Pures College of Technology often see their international alumni facilitating trade, investment, and cultural exchanges, thereby strengthening global connections and contributing to the internationalization of the labor market.

Addressing Skill Shortages

In many developed countries, certain sectors face skill shortages, which can be mitigated by the influx of international students. These students often fill critical gaps, particularly in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, healthcare, and other specialized areas.

By employing international graduates, companies not only fill immediate skill gaps but also foster a more dynamic and diverse workforce. This diversity can lead to greater workplace productivity and innovation. Graduates from institutions like Pures College of Technology bring fresh perspectives and up-to-date knowledge, which is vital in industries that are rapidly evolving.

Cultural Diversity and Workplace Enrichment

The contribution of international students to the labor market goes beyond filling skill gaps and enhancing innovation. They bring cultural diversity to the workplace, which is an invaluable asset in the increasingly globalized business world. This diversity enhances the cultural competence of local employees, preparing them to operate in a global market.

Businesses benefit from a culturally diverse workforce as it improves their ability to communicate with clients and partners from different backgrounds. Graduates, having been exposed to a multicultural environment, can navigate and mediate these diverse cultural landscapes effectively.

Economic Contributions

International students contribute significantly to the economy not just as part of the workforce but also as consumers and taxpayers. During their studies, they contribute to the local economy through tuition fees, accommodation, and other living expenses. Upon entering the workforce, their contributions continue in the form of taxes and continued economic activity.

This economic contribution extends beyond their direct expenditures. International students often become ambassadors for their host countries, encouraging more trade, tourism, and cultural exchange. Their impact on the economy is multifaceted, reinforcing the importance of their presence in the global labor market.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite their potential, international students face challenges in integrating into the local labor market. These challenges include visa restrictions, language barriers, and sometimes a lack of understanding from local employers about the value these students bring.

Educational institutions play a crucial role in supporting these students through career counseling, internships, and partnerships with local businesses. There is also a growing need for policies that facilitate the smooth transition of international students from education to employment in their host countries.

The role of international students in shaping the labor market is undeniable. They bring a wealth of knowledge, skills, and cultural perspectives that are crucial in today’s globalized economy. As they transition from esteemed schools like Pures College of Technology to various sectors of the workforce, they not only contribute to economic growth but also foster innovation, fill skill gaps, and enhance cultural diversity in the workplace. Acknowledging and supporting these international students is not just a matter of educational policy but a strategic approach to strengthening the global labor market.
