Amal Clooney said marrying George Clooney significantly changed the way her personal life and professional career intersected, offering new details about balancing public attention with her work as an international human rights lawyer and raising their family. Speaking during a Cartier Dialogues event in Bangkok in June, the attorney discussed adapting to a level of public exposure she had not experienced before marrying the Academy Award-winning actor in 2014 while maintaining her legal career and family priorities.
The British-Lebanese lawyer explained that before her marriage, she was able to keep her professional responsibilities and personal life largely separate. That distinction became more difficult after her relationship with George Clooney drew worldwide media attention, prompting her to reconsider how she approached public appearances while continuing to practice law.
Amal Clooney Describes Adjusting to Public Life
During the Bangkok event, Amal explained that her work and personal life once existed in separate spaces, allowing her to control when and how she appeared in public outside of courtrooms and legal proceedings. After marrying George Clooney, however, that separation changed considerably.
She said she initially became conscious of how she might be perceived when attending public events, including whether clothing choices or social appearances could affect how she was viewed professionally. Amal acknowledged that she once worried about attending high-profile functions before appearing before judges in court only days later.
Over time, she said she came to believe that professional credibility depended on the quality of her work rather than public perception. She explained that she ultimately chose not to let outside opinions prevent her from participating in activities that mattered to her family or relationship.
Career Continued Alongside Family Life
Before meeting George Clooney, Amal had already established herself as one of the world’s leading international human rights lawyers. She has represented governments, journalists, political prisoners and victims of human rights abuses in courts around the world.
Her legal work continued after the couple married in September 2014. Two years later, Amal and George founded the Clooney Foundation for Justice, an organization focused on advancing justice through legal advocacy, accountability efforts and educational initiatives.
The foundation has expanded its work internationally, supporting women and girls facing legal barriers and providing assistance in countries where access to legal representation remains limited.
During her remarks, Amal pointed to Malawi as one example of the organization’s work. She noted that many girls in the country are forced into marriage at a young age while legal resources remain scarce, with only hundreds of lawyers serving the nation’s population. Through the foundation’s programs, the organization has worked to increase access to legal assistance for vulnerable women and girls.
Parenthood Brought New Priorities
Another major turning point for the couple came in 2017 when they welcomed fraternal twins, Alexander and Ella.
Becoming parents prompted both Amal and George Clooney to reconsider aspects of their professional work, particularly assignments that required traveling to dangerous locations.
George previously explained that both he and Amal had regularly worked in conflict zones before becoming parents. He had traveled to regions including the Nuba Mountains, Darfur and Abyei, while Amal spent extended periods working on legal cases in Beirut under challenging conditions.
Following the birth of their children, the couple agreed to reduce travel involving significant security risks.
George said they realized their responsibilities as parents required them to change the rules they had previously followed regarding assignments in unstable regions. Their decisions reflected a shared commitment to prioritizing their family’s safety while continuing to support humanitarian and legal causes through other avenues.
Marriage Combined Two Public Careers
Although George Clooney had spent decades in the public eye before their relationship began, Amal entered the marriage from a profession where privacy had largely been possible.
Her comments illustrated how combining two high-profile careers created new challenges that neither professional achievements nor legal expertise could entirely prepare her for.
Instead of separating her work from her public identity, Amal gradually learned to accept that media attention would remain part of her life while continuing to focus on legal advocacy.
She explained that determining the level of public exposure became more complicated after marriage, but she eventually concluded that maintaining her family’s well-being and continuing meaningful work mattered more than concerns about outside judgment.
The couple have continued making joint public appearances at charity events and foundation initiatives while also supporting each other’s individual careers.
Earlier this year, Amal and George attended The King’s Trust 50th Anniversary Celebration at the Royal Albert Hall in London. They have also remained closely involved with the annual Albie Awards, established through the Clooney Foundation for Justice to recognize individuals defending human rights around the world.
Alongside their public commitments, the couple now spend much of their family life at their farm in France, balancing international travel with raising their two children.
