Whether it’s “Da Bears” of the 1980s, the Bulls of the 1990s, the Blackhawks of the mid-2000s, or the city’s beloved Cubs, who FINALLY clinched that elusive World Series championship in 2016 after 108 years of misery, Chicago in many ways is synonymous with its pro sports teams. And while most sports legends inevitably come and go in whatever cities they make a name for themselves, here’s a glance at where some of them lived while calling the Windy City home.
Jonathan Toews – 9 W. Walton
Jonathan Toews is an icon in the Windy City, having led his hometown Blackhawks to three Stanley Cup championships. He joined the likes of several notable city residents in buying a condo at 9 W. Walton Street in 2018. While details about the unit itself remain unknown, it closed at an official purchase price of $6.44 million. That can buy a lot of space – even in the city. Toews has purchased and sold other pieces of real estate in Chicago as well, including a three-bedroom condo in Lakeshore East’s Regatta building and a five-bedroom single-family home in Lincoln Park.
Corey Crawford – Hayden West Loop
Another Blackhawks legend, Corey Crawford has decided to invest his NHL salary in Chicago’s revered West Loop neighborhood. There’s a lot more publicly available information about this property; the four-bedroom penthouse unit spans 4,835 square feet in size and sits on the eighth floor of the Hayden West Loop condo building. Corey Crawford purchased the property with his wife back in 2019 for just under $4.1 million.
Brandon Marshall – 6 N. Michigan Avenue
Brandon Marshall is a six-time Pro Bowl selection, two-time All-Pro wide receiver, and one of the most productive pass catchers in NFL history. He also happens to be the former owner of a lovely condo on Michigan Avenue. The athlete purchased his 6,400-square-foot unit in 2014 for $3.9 million but ultimately sold it at a loss for $3.2 million dollars five years later in 2019. It’s hard to see how that was possible given the number of things this place has going for it. Marshall’s former home is located within the famous Montgomery Ward building on 6 North Michigan Avenue – one of the best locations in all of Chicago. Not to mention the fact that it was lived in by an NFL superstar.
Jason Heyward – 9 W. Walton
If you love crossover episodes on TV, you’ll be satisfied to learn of one real-life crossover between two famous Chicago athletes from different leagues. MLB outfielder Jason Heyward once shared an address with NHL player Jonathan Toews at 9 West Walton Street – neighbors in the same building. Heyward purchased his condo in 2018 for $6.9 million then sold it for a profit in 2020 at a closing price of $7.2 million. The lucky buyer now enjoys 5,200 square feet of living space, a balcony with stunning views of the Gold Coast, and maybe even some of Jason Heyward’s mail.
Derek Rose – Trump Tower
Located in the heart of River North and offering premium views of the river, it’s no surprise some of the city’s elite have called Trump Tower home over the years. Derek Rose is one of Chicago’s best examples, as he previously bought a spacious three-bedroom condo in the 401 North Wabash building back in 2012. The sale price? Just under three million dollars. But that’s nothing compared to the $94.3 million contract extension with the Bulls he signed a year prior
Patrick Kane – 9 W. Walton
This condo building may have had a trio of sports stars under its roof at one time; Blackhawks right wing Patrick Kane purchased a unit of his own at 9 West Walton Street in 2019. His four-bedroom home is reported to have a fireplace, hardwood floors, and a dining room. It’s a second property to Kane’s two-bedroom, 2,076-square-foot unit on the 33rd floor of the Trump International Hotel and Tower, for which he paid $2.06 million in 2008.
